What Is A Paraoptometric?

A paraoptometric (sometimes referred to as a "para") is a person who works under the direct supervision of a licensed doctor of optometry. Paras wishing to do so may become nationally certified by meeting eligibility requirements and passing one or more certification examinations.

AOA Certification

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recognized titles and certification levels for paraoptometrics are:

Certified Paraoptometric (CPO) - a person who has attained national recognition via certification by demonstrating an understanding of the concepts used in optometric care. The CPO has demonstrated competence by a didactic examination and is on-the-job trained.

**NOTE: Nebraska paraoptometrics who have passed the Nebraska Proficiency Exam AND are still in good standing with their continuing education hours, can bypass the CPO examination and begin with CPOA.

Certified Paraoptometric Assistant (CPOA) - a person who has attained national recognition via certification by demonstrating the ability to apply the concepts used in optometric care. The CPOA has demonstrated competence by a didactic examination. May be on-the-job trained or a graduate of an AOA Paraoptometric Section approved assistant program.

Certified Paraoptometric Technician (CPOT) - a person who has attained national recognition via certification by demonstrating the ability to understand, apply and interrelate the concepts used in optometric care. The CPOT has demonstrated competence by a didactic and practical examination. May be on-the-job trained or a graduate of an Accreditation Council on Optometric Education accredited technician program.

The American Board of Opticianry (ABO) and National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) are national not-for-profit organizations for the voluntary certification of ophthalmic dispensers.
